SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

Lancaster is home to one of the largest populations of Amish. Amish do not believe in owning motor vehicles but rather use horse drawn buggies or carriages. Although you will be unlikely to see any Amish buggies along Main Route 30, you may likely encounter them on the secondary roads leading to/from Route 30.

Buggies are usually equipped with turn signals and flashing warning lights but not always. PA law only requires a reflective RED triangle on the back indicating “slow moving vehicle”.

PLEASE SHARE THE ROAD AND KEEP IN MIND THE FOLLOWING!

Tips for driving with Amish buggies on the road:

  • Slow down when approaching the rear of Amish buggies ahead and always be prepared to stop.

  • Watch for turning signals or hand gestures for turning.

  • Pass ONLY when you can clearly see it is safe to completely pass without coming back too soo and hitting the horse or buggy.

  • Never pass a buggy near the top of a hill or start of an unviewable curve.

  • Horses are relatively slow to cars and do NOT keep up with the speed limit.

  • Horses are unpredictable and cannot always stop on a dime.

  • Do not blast your horn at horses because you want them to move faster.

  • Exercise more caution if there is more than one buggy in a row to pass.

  • Extra caution at night for buggies with no lights.
